They got it done

It wasn’t pretty, but they got it done.

It took seven games, but they got it done.

They were routed on home ice and forced to play on the road in an elimination game, but they got it done.

There were cries to oust Jimmy Howard, but they got it done.

Their defense wasn’t good enough, their power play wasn’t good enough, their forechecking wasn’t good enough, but they got it done.

The Wings and their fans are despised by hockey fans across the country, and with the weight of an up and down season on their back, they got it done.

It was only the first round of a long playoff season, but they got it done.

Game 7

The Detroit Red Wings dominated Game 7 in Phoenix on Tuesday, topping the Coyotes 6-1.

Pavel Datsyuk and Nicklas Lidstrom both scored twice, as the Wings bombarded Coyotes goalie Illya Bryzgalov with 50 shots. Phoenix managed 33.

The lone goal for the Coyotes came off the stick of Vernon Fiddler who got a fortunate bounce off a face off in the Wings zone in which Jimmy Howard was screened.  Outside of that, Howard was brilliant.

The key to the game was a 5 on 3 power play for the Coyotes at the end of the second period.  At the time, the Wings were up 3-1, and a goal there may have turned the momentum of the game.  Didn’t happen.  Jimmy Howard came up big, and the defense played their hearts out.

Moving on

The San Jose Sharks await the Detroit Red Wings in the second round of the playoffs.  They are getting much needed rest after a brutal 6 game series with the Colorado Avalanche.

The Wings have had the Sharks number, going 8-3-1 against them over the last 3 regular seasons.  They also knocked the Sharks out of the 2007 Conference semifinals.
